The Boys & Girls
Clubs of North County "Step Up to the Plate/ It Just Takes One” campaign” is on deck. The club will
officially kick off their campaign on Monday
October 17th.
You may not be aware that after school hours are a critical
time for many young people in our community. Many have little or no adult
interaction or supervision after school. Children face threats of drugs,
alcohol, increased drop-out rates and teenage pregnancy. They also face being
victims of crime or getting into trouble with the law unless we provide a
positive alternative for them.
The government as you know is not the answer. Everyone
including the government is stretched thin and struggling with the current
economic situation. You may hold a
critical key to the success in reversing this disturbing trend amongst our
young people.
You are invited to participate in the "Step Up to the Plate/It Just One” campaign to help address this
serious issue. The campaign will run between October 17h and January 31, 2012.
Merrilee Neal, this
years’ campaign commissioner stated, "The goal of the campaign is to
raise $92,000 from caring community
individuals like yourself to support the five core program areas the Boys and
Girls Club offers its’ members-Character
and Leadership Development, The Arts, Education and Career Development, Health
and Life Skills and Sports, Fitness and Recreation.
The campaign features three (3) mock baseball teams made up
of one team captain and 6 to 9 players per team that will compete against each
other to see which team can raise the most funds for the organization. This
year the team captains will be club
members and the players will be made up of board members and community
volunteers. The teams and captains are:
- Dodgers/Team Captain, Genesis
Lupercio
- Angels/Team Captain, Jamie Jacobs
- Padres/Team Captain, Thomas
Roberts
Neal further
stated, "Thousands of kids every year stay out of trouble by being involved at
the Boys and Girls Club. At the club
they develop positive character and leadership skills through club programs.
They learn new skills and social competencies, go on educational field trips,
learn to play musical instruments, do their homework, and learn how to swim,
play sports and most importantly the Club helps them become the best that they can be
